Parodia subterranea F. Ritter

Ritter described the species in the third issue of the Dutch magazine Succulenta in 1964. The name subterranea points to a peculiarity of the species - during winter, the plants recede very far into the ground. The distribution area reaches across the Bolivian departments Chuquisaca and Tarija, the main location is situated in the Culpina valley. In nature, the plants do not grow overly large; up to 8 cm in diameter is the maximum. Thorn colour is often dark to black, though there are also populations with yellow or brown thorns.
