Gymnos from A to Z

Gymnocalycium chacoense Amerhauser

The species comes from an area with an average minimum temperature of about 19 degree Celsius and a rainfall of 500 mm in the annual mean. Night frost is an absolute exception. During winter, temperatures around 5 degree Celsius combined with completely dry substrate have been tried and tested with me. Lower temperatures are tolerated over short periods of time. Unlike closely related species like G. chiquitanum and G. paediophilum this form bears cooler hibernation temperatures very well. I made the experience that the floral display considerably diminishes after a warmer hibernation period. In the growing season the plants can get plenty of water and a semi-shady to sunny location is favourable. Propagation is not a problem with older specimen, since plenty of sprouts are developed. Growing from seeds is not a problem. Their maturing time in culture concludes after approximately 8 weeks. The fruits are very small and usually contain no more than 100 seeds.
