Gymnos from A to Z

Gymnocalycium eurypleurum Ritter

The species comes from an area with an average minimum temperature of 19°C and an average annual rainfall of 430 mm. Night frosts are absolute exceptions. During winter, temperatures around 10°C combined with completely dry substrate have been tried and tested with me. Lower temperatures are tolerated over short periods of time, but often result in loss of roots. In the growing season the plants can get plenty of water and a semi-shady spot is favourable. Once the specimen are sprouting well a sunny location does not hurt; the plants then develop very long thorns. Growing from the well germinable seeds is not a problem.
