Gymnos in habitat

Gymnocalycium spegazzinii Britton & Rose

The habitat of G. spegazzinii spans over the Argentinian provinces of Salta,

Tucaman and Catamarca. This widespread species is highly variable and can be

found in heights of 1550 to 3350 metres. Strongly spined plants growing

pillar-like in old age were described by Backeberg as G. spegazzinii var.

major. These forms grow south of Cachi and in the south-west of Molinos.

The prettiest plants - in my opinion - grow north-east of Cafayete; they

were described as G. spegazzinii var. punillense.
